Your alarm goes off, you pick out a nice outfit, pack your lunch and race out the door ready to learn face-to-face with people you haven’t seen in months. The excitement of getting back into the morning routine once again was something many students didn’t think they’d ever be so excited for. After the back-and-forth between the online and hybrid schedule, the Board of Education announced that in-person learning would start back on March 1.
Since the announcement, students have reflected on what they look forward to after being online for most of the year so far.
In-person learning will help students gain access to many resources they didn’t have doing school fully online. The simplest things make the biggest difference.
“We can see what other questions people had, because sometimes they were the exact questions I had,” sophomore Emmy Benton said.
There will no longer be Google Meets where you couldn’t see anyones faces, and many students will learn better. It will be nice to interact with your classmates, even if it is six feet apart.
Students missed their favorite teachers and classes as well, many of which make a huge difference in students’ high school years. Sophomore Chloe Wienert is looking forward to art class the most.
“I had good friends there and I felt like it would be really fun,” Wienert said.
Going into the building two days a week will also give students a push to get things done if that was lacking while being remote. Learning without at-home distractions also helps students stay focused.
“Having motivation to do my school work,” junior Lauren Hughes said, when asked what she was most excited about.
Learning concepts in school rather than just being assigned worksheets and videos to watch, in which students had to figure out things on their own, also makes it much easier for many students to stay on top of things.
“Not just doing assignments, but learning,” sophomore JoJo Morgan said when asked how in-person school benefited him.
This was not only important to him but to many others: gaining more information and that information sticking, rather than just pressing the “submit” button.
Students are hopeful and excited for new opportunities, change of pace, and being in a classroom setting. It may be far from normal, but being able to go back gives students a sense of life before “2020”.
Third time’s a charm, and a lot of students are looking forward to what’s to come for the rest of the year.
“It will be nice to just be able to raise my hand,” Benton said.
